Drass in October
Ladakh, India
Most services close by late October, leaving minimal support for independent travel
October freezes Drass toward winter. Temperatures: -5°C to 10°C. The Zoji La may close any day (sometimes early October, sometimes late). The last vehicles race through before the snow seals the pass until May. The valley braces for its annual isolation.
The October story
October Drass is a farewell. The valley is brown, the peaks are white, and the War Memorial stands in a landscape that is returning to its dominant state: cold, empty, vast. The last tourists hurry through with their backs to Drass, headed for Srinagar before the pass closes. If you stay — if you deliberately pause in Drass in October — you see the community that remains: soldiers on duty, Dard-Shin families preparing stores, and a village that has survived its winters for centuries without your help or pity. Rooms: ₹500-1,500/night.
