Drass in November
Ladakh, India
Roads freeze over and become impassable by late November
November locks Drass into winter. Temperatures: -15°C to 0°C. The Zoji La is closed. The highway empties. Drass returns to its winter isolation — military garrison, Dard-Shin village, and the cold.
The November story
November Drass is for almost nobody. The War Memorial stands under first snow, visited only by military personnel. The town market reduces to essentials. The silence is aggressive. If you are here — perhaps stuck by an early Zoji La closure, perhaps deliberately — you experience Drass as it truly is for most of the year: a small community at the edge of habitable altitude, enduring cold that would shut down most civilisations. Homestays may accept guests; confirm by phone before attempting the Kargil road. ₹500-800/night.
