Drass in January
Ladakh, India
Temperatures plunge below -30°C, making basic functions like breathing and vehicle operation hazardous
January Drass is one of the coldest places you can legally visit on earth. At 3,280 metres, the "Gateway to Ladakh" sees temperatures drop to -30°C at night and struggle past -15°C by day. The Zoji La pass that connects Drass to Srinagar closes in winter. Getting here requires the Kargil road, which itself is a gamble.
The January story
Drass holds the record for India's lowest recorded temperature: -60°C in 1995. January is not that extreme, but -30°C is extreme enough. The Dras War Memorial, honouring soldiers who fought in the 1999 Kargil War, stands under heavy snow — the sacrifice it commemorates becomes viscerally real when you stand at the memorial in temperatures that soldiers fought in. The village itself is sparse: a few houses, a mosque, military installations, and a silence that cold imposes. If you reach Drass in January (possible via Kargil on good days), accommodation is basic homestays at ₹500-1,000/night. This is not tourism. This is witnessing.
