Devprayag in June
Uttarakhand, India
Rivers swell dangerously as monsoon rains begin, making river crossings and gorge walks hazardous
Peak crowds
June is one of Devprayag's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Char Dham transit point — Sangam ghat busy during yatra season May-Jun and Oct. Otherwise a peaceful confluence town.
June monsoon reaches Devprayag with 250-350mm. The rivers swell dramatically, the sangam loses its two-tone clarity to brown flood, and the town watches its ghats disappear under rising water. The Char Dham season continues despite rain — pilgrims do not stop for weather.
The June story
Monsoon Devprayag is dramatic rather than beautiful. The confluence, which in winter is a gentle meeting of colours, becomes a violent collision of brown torrents. The ghats flood — steps that you walked in January are now underwater. The Raghunath temple, perched above the waterline, has survived centuries of this annual siege. Landslides can disrupt the Rishikesh road. Pilgrims continue regardless, soaked and determined, and their persistence is its own kind of sermon. Rooms: ₹500-1,200/night.
