Chopta in June
Uttarakhand, India
Go in June—meadows are lush green, daytime warmth lets you trek comfortably, but afternoon clouds limit views after 2 p.m., so start early.
Peak crowds
June is one of Chopta's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Tungnath trek very popular — trail gets congested on weekends May-Jun. Chandrashila summit sunrise slots fill fast.
June brings the monsoon to Chopta, usually arriving in the first or second week. Before the monsoon hits, the first week of June can still be pleasant — warm (18-20°C), green, and relatively clear. Once the rains start, everything changes. Visibility drops to 50-100 meters in cloud cover, trails become slippery, and the forest floor turns into a leech habitat. Rainfall averages 200-300mm across the month. The road from Gopeshwar develops potholes and occasional landslide debris. Tungnath temple remains open but the trek becomes a wet, muddy slog.
The June story
Early June (pre-monsoon) is an underrated window — crowds have thinned after May, the meadows are lush, and you get 2-3 good weather days per week. But once monsoon sets in, Chopta transforms. The forest becomes atmospheric — mist threading through ancient oaks, waterfalls appearing on cliff faces that were dry in May. The problem is practical: leeches are aggressive on the trail from 2,400m to 3,200m. Leech socks and salt are essential. The trail above treeline becomes slippery on exposed rock. Rain makes the final approach to Chandrashila genuinely risky — wet rock scrambling at 4,000m with zero visibility is not worth the summit. Tungnath temple trek is still doable if you accept getting soaked. Accommodation options thin out as some operators close for monsoon. BSNL signal degrades further in heavy cloud cover. If you come in June, target the first week and have a flexible itinerary that lets you bail if the monsoon arrives early.
