Peak Season
Chopta in May
Uttarakhand, India
May remains excellent at Chopta â the last of the rhododendrons fade at higher elevations while the meadows turn a vivid green. All snow has melted below Chandrashila summit. Temperatures peak for the season: 18-22°C daytime at the meadow, 5-8°C at night. Tungnath temple is fully operational with daily pujas. The trail is dry, well-marked, and at its most accessible. This is the busiest month â weekends see 100+ trekkers on the trail. Dhabas are fully stocked. The road from Gopeshwar is in good condition. Pre-monsoon haze starts building in the last week, slightly reducing visibility.
The May story
May is the most forgiving month to trek Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila. The trail is bone-dry, temperatures are comfortable in a single layer, and the green meadows contrasted against snow-capped peaks make every photo look effortless. Early May still catches late rhododendron bloom above 3,200m. The Chandrashila sunrise remains spectacular but you need clear skies â check weather before committing to the 4 AM start. By late May, pre-monsoon clouds build by afternoon, so plan your summit push for early morning. Chopta meadow itself is beautiful for camping â flat ground, surrounded by deodar and oak, with unobstructed views of Kedarnath peak. Bird activity is excellent: Himalayan monal, koklass pheasant, and if you are lucky, a lammergeier overhead. The downside is crowds and slightly higher prices at dhabas. Book camping spots or huts at least a week in advance for weekends. Carry sunscreen â UV at 2,680m in May is no joke.
