ELEVATION
Chopta is a meadow at 2680m with rhododendron forests, Himalayan panoramas, and the easiest base for reaching Chandrashila summit at 4000m. No temple crowds, just nature.
If
You develop a mild headache, nausea, dizziness or loss of appetite above roughly 2,500m within 6–24 hours of arrival.
Then
Stop ascending. Rest at the current altitude for 24–48 hours. Hydrate aggressively. If symptoms worsen or fail to improve, descend 500m and seek medical help. Never ascend further while symptomatic — HAPE and HACE kill quietly.
Full protocol →
If
Your UPI apps return Server Error or Bank Unavailable repeatedly, and no card reader is in sight.
Then
This is the default state in most border valleys, not an emergency. Carry at least ₹10,000 cash in mixed denominations for any trip above 2,500m or off a state highway. Withdraw at the LAST reliable ATM — usually the district HQ — because village ATMs are ornamental.

Every destination carries trade-offs. The cards below score the practical ones: confidence in the data, kids-suitability, solo-female read, and the emergency floor.

Mini-Switzerland + Tungnath trek base — camp-style stays only, pre-booked via a registered operator. Don't rely on roadside dhaba-stays.
Chopta is a small meadow settlement at 2,680m known as the Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand. It is the base camp for the trek to Tungnath (the highest Shiva temple in the world at 3,680m) and Chandrashila peak. The area is sacred in Hindu mythology and sits within the Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary.
Trekking gear and warm layers essential. If visiting Tungnath temple at the top, dress conservatively — cover arms and legs as a sign of respect. Remove shoes at the temple.
Very basic food — a handful of seasonal dhabas serve rice, dal, Maggi noodles, and chai. Safe but extremely limited. Carry energy bars and snacks. Only bottled water.
Cash only. No ATMs anywhere nearby. Nearest reliable ATM is in Ukhimath (25 km) or Rudraprayag (60 km). Carry all cash you need.
low — almost entirely Hindi and Garhwali. A few trekking guides speak basic English during peak season.
BSNL works intermittently in Chopta. Jio and Airtel have no coverage. You will be largely offline.
Delhi — approximately 430 km by road
Standard Indian e-Visa covers Chopta. No special permits required but Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary entry fee applies.

World's highest Shiva temple at 12,073 ft. 3.5 km trek through rhododendron forests from Chopta.
Summit at 13,000 ft above Tungnath with 360-degree Himalayan panorama including Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba.
NEIGHBOURHOODS · WITHIN CHOPTA
The easiest 4000m summit in India — 360-degree Himalayan panorama that justifies every calorie burned getting here
1.5km steep climb above Tungnath. At the top: 360-degree view of Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath peaks. The single best reward-for-effort summit in Uttarakhand.
A still lake that reflects the entire Chaukhamba massif — camp here overnight for the mirror effect at dawn
2.5km trek from Sari village. Small lake surrounded by oaks and rhododendrons. At dawn, if the water is still, Chaukhamba reflects perfectly. The camping here is magical — stars, silence, and mountains.
World highest Shiva temple — 3.5km paved trek from Chopta
Over 1000 years old. One of the Panch Kedar. The trek is paved (pilgrimage route) so more hike than technical trek. At 3680m, the prayer flags and the view are worth every step.

A small longitudinal lake at 2,438m hidden inside the forest above Sari village. Chaukhamba and the Mandakini range mirror perfectly on the surface in the still pre-dawn — the reflection that gets posted as 'Tungnath' on Instagram is almost always actually shot here. The lake is mentioned in the Mahabharata as the spot where the Yaksha tested Yudhishthira. Best: Apr-Jun and Sep-Nov for clearest reflections. Pre-dawn is non-negotiable for the mountain mirror.. Reach: Drive 14km from Chopta to Sari village. 2.5km uphill trek (1-1.5 hours) on a well-marked stone path through oak and rhododendron. Camp permitted near the lake (forest department fee).. Tip: Reach the lake by 5:30am for sunrise — by 8am the wind ripples the surface. Camping costs ~Rs 200 per tent at the forest hut; water available. Carry a torch for the pre-dawn climb. Sari has a few homestays for early-night sleep before the climb..
A 5 sq-km musk deer breeding reserve at 2,500m on the Chopta-Gopeshwar road, set up to protect the endangered kasturi mriga. The trail loops through dense oak and rhododendron with fenced enclosures where the shy deer are visible at dawn and dusk; Himalayan monals and woodpeckers turn up reliably on the cooler ridges. Best: Open April 1 to November 30. Best windows: March-May for rhododendron bloom and September-November for clear views. Reach: 7 km from Chopta on the Chopta-Gopeshwar road, 1 km off the highway. Shared jeep from Chopta crossing or self-drive; the gate has parking for 6-8 vehicles.. Tip: Closed December-March (snow). Carry binoculars — musk deer are skittish and the enclosure is large. No food or plastic inside. Combine with the Mandal valley drive to Gopeshwar (35 km further) for a full day..

WHAT A DAY ACTUALLY COSTS
Base for Tungnath/Chandrashila trek; camping and basic lodges only; no luxury; trek guide ₹500-1000/day
WHAT CROWDS LOOK LIKE
Tungnath trek very popular — trail gets congested on weekends May-Jun. Chandrashila summit sunrise slots fill fast.
INFRASTRUCTURE · ON THE GROUND
Chopta is accessed via shared cabs from Rudraprayag or Ukhimath. Self-drive common. Local Chopta taxi for Deoria Tal + Ukhimath: ₹2000/day. Rishikesh to Chopta one-way: ₹8000–10,000.
Meadow camps + resorts accept any-time check-in. No permits needed. Chopta is in Chamoli district Uttarakhand — winter (Dec–Mar) trek requires micro-spikes + experienced guide; don't go unprepared. Alcohol: not served (temple zone).
Cash essential. No ATMs at Chopta. Carry ₹5000+ per person for 3-day trip. Meadow camps accept advance UPI at booking.
No ATMs at Chopta. Ukhimath (20km) has 1 that works ~50%. Rudraprayag (60km) has multiple.
Chopta has no shops — just meadow camps + a few dhabas. Sari village (Deoria base) has basic grocery + chai shops 7am–7pm. Stock up at Ukhimath or Rudraprayag.
Hindi + Garhwali. English limited. Camp staff manage English for trekkers. Foreigners manage with basic Hindi + gestures.
BSNL patchy. Jio has no coverage. Camps have no Wi-Fi. True disconnection destination.

WHERE TO EAT · 5 VERIFIED PICKS
Signature: malta tea with mandua roti
Boutique homestay-cafe set on terrace farms about 15 minutes uphill from Sari village on the Devariyatal trekking trail (~6,790 ft). Founded by Randeep Hari and Rajani Muraleedharan; chef Rana Ji's malta-fruit tea and pahadi thali are the property's quiet draws. Renamed from Cafe Buransh in early 2026.
Tip: Cafe is technically for in-house guests but takes walk-ins on the Devariyatal trail when there's capacity — confirm on +91-8197461815 before the climb. The malta tea uses locally-foraged fruit and is only available October-February.
Signature: mandua roti with seasonal pahadi sabzi
Set in the meadow valley about 5 km before the Tungnath trek base — solar-powered, home-style kitchen, runs both as a lodge and a sit-down restaurant for trekkers driving up from Ukhimath. Pahadi rotis and slow-cooked mutton are the kitchen's quiet credentials.
Tip: Order ahead by phone if arriving past sunset — solar power throttles the kitchen after dark and they prep mutton dishes only on advance request.
Signature: garhwali thali with mandua roti
Magpie Group runs the oldest permanent camp in the Chopta belt at 2,400 m, with a multi-cuisine kitchen using locally sourced organic produce. Dinner is fixed pure-veg; breakfast carries eggs; non-veg only on advance request — a rule the kitchen has held since the camp opened.
Tip: Walk-ins for meals are entertained only when the camp isn't full — call ahead on +91-9758667755. The restaurant tent's tea + bonfire combo at sunset is the picture trekkers come back for.
Signature: aloo paratha with masala chai
Highest-rated eatery on TripAdvisor for the Chopta belt (5.0 / 23 reviews) — relocated from Baniyakund to Sari Village around 2025. Sharon and family run a small five-room property where the cafe doubles as the breakfast stop for Devariyatal trekkers heading up at dawn.
Tip: Get the aloo paratha at breakfast before the 06:30 trek group leaves for Devariyatal — they fold mountain butter through the dough. Tea is brewed strong and refilled without asking.
Signature: maggi with masala chai
Eco-camp at Baniyakund junction near the Hanuman Mandir, run by the Negi family with an in-house kitchen for resident campers and walk-in trekkers. Standard pahadi-veg menu, simple but consistent — the practical lunch stop for groups doing Tungnath the same day.
Tip: Walk-in lunch (12-3pm) is doable but call first — the kitchen scales for in-house guests and a 20-person group lunch can swallow capacity. Maggi and chai stay on tap.

We pick this over Himalayan Homestay Huddu Valley because Humming Bird has 8.2/10 on Booking.com from verified 2025 reviews, a proper restaurant, and mountain-facing balconies—all at ₹3–5k. The homestay costs ₹1–1.5k less per night but relies on OTA-only booking and limited year-round staff. For the ₹1–1.5k difference, you get a dining room, bonfire-on-request, and a property that answers the phone. We pick Snowpod as the experience slot because it is the only property in the dossier that was built around a specific night—the one where the Milky Way is overhead and you are horizontal on a private deck rather than sharing a bonfire with strangers. April puts you at Baniyakund (summer location), which means the site is freshly operational. Organic on-site meals remove the need to drive anywhere after dark. Nothing else in Chopta's market offers a dedicated stargazing structure at this price p

Real experiences by traveler type — not generic star ratings
Chopta is a meadow with a few dhabas — that is it. And it is perfect. The 4km trek to Tungnath (highest Shiva temple in the world) is steep but short. Continue 1.5km to Chandrashila peak for 360-degree Himalayan panorama. I camped at Chopta for Rs 500 including dinner. Unforgettable sunrise.
💡 Tip: Camp at Chopta and start the Tungnath trek at 4am. Reach Chandrashila for sunrise. The effort is brutal but the reward is life-changing.
Chandrashila summit at sunrise — Nanda Devi, Trishul, Chaukhamba, and the entire Garhwal range lit gold. I have shot across the Himalayas and this is top 3 for the effort-to-reward ratio. The rhododendron forests in March-April along the Tungnath trail bloom in bright red.
💡 Tip: March-April for rhododendrons. October-November for clearest views. Both seasons are incredible for different reasons.
Do not underestimate the altitude — Tungnath is at 3680m and Chandrashila at 4000m. The trek is only 5.5km but the last kilometer to Chandrashila is very steep. Start early, carry water and snacks. The views from the top justify everything. Come back down via the same route — no alternate path.
💡 Tip: Wear proper trekking shoes. The trail to Tungnath has loose rocks and the last stretch to Chandrashila requires scrambling.
We trekked to Chandrashila together and watched the sunrise holding hands with the entire Himalayan range in front of us. That moment alone was worth the trip to India. The camping at Chopta under stars with no light pollution — pure magic. The trek is doable for anyone with basic fitness.
💡 Tip: Book a tent at Chopta with dinner and breakfast included. Rs 800-1000 per person. The bonfire under stars is the highlight.
Start Tungnath trek at 4am for Chandrashila sunrise. Chopta is the base (2680m). Tungnath temple (3680m) is 3.5km uphill, moderate trek. Chandrashila summit (4000m) is 1.5km beyond Tungnath. Total 5km each way, 4h round trip for fit hikers. Reach Chandrashila by 6am for first light on Nanda Devi, Trisul, Chaukhamba peaks — arguably the most spectacular sunrise panorama in Uttarakhand.
Tungnath temple — the highest Shiva temple in the world, one of 5 Panch Kedar temples. Morning aarti at 7:30am if timing works. Descend to Chopta by 10am.
Back at Chopta — breakfast-lunch at Chopta Meadows Resort or any trekker dhaba. Rest. The sunrise trek is genuinely tiring at altitude.
Deoria Tal (15km from Chopta, 30 min drive + 2km easy trek from Sari village) — the alpine lake where Yudhishthira's Yaksha dialogue is said to have occurred. Tranquil reflection of Chaukhamba mountain. 90 min visit. Return Chopta.
Chopta's few resorts + camps are quiet evenings — meadow walks until sunset + basic dinner. Bed early.
If weather turns
Chopta winter (Dec–Mar) has heavy snow — Tungnath trek becomes technical snow hike with micro-spikes required. Monsoon (Jul–Sep) brings leeches + rain. Apr–Jun + Oct–Nov are ideal seasons. Bad weather + Tungnath closed: Deoria Tal is lower + more accessible. Indoor fallback: hotels only (Chopta is essentially a meadow camp area, not a town).
Tap any traveler type below to see how this place feels for them.
Good for families with hiking-capable kids (10+). Chandrashila trek is real — not for young kids or unfit adults. Deoria Tal is a much gentler family alternative. Meadow camps are kid-friendly if you're camping-comfortable.
Best for
Chandrashila + Tungnath trek is the most accessible "real" Himalayan trek — reachable by car to 2680m + a moderate 5km trek to 4000m + iconic summit views. The perfect starter Himalayan trek before attempting harder stuff.
Best for
Tungnath is one of 5 Kedar temples (Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar, Kalpeshwar). For Shiva pilgrims + Panch Kedar completionists, visiting Tungnath is essential.
Best for
Chandrashila's sunrise panorama is arguably the best summit photograph accessible by non-technical trek in India. Nanda Devi, Trisul, Chaukhamba, Kedarnath peaks all visible in a single 180° sweep.
Best for
Chopta combines with Char Dham Yatra (May–Oct) naturally — 1-day side trip off the Kedarnath route. For serious Uttarakhand exploration, Chopta + Deoria Tal + Tungnath + Kedarnath + Badrinath is the classic circuit.
