Binsar in May
Uttarakhand, India
Haze significantly cuts mountain views, the main draw at this elevation
Peak crowds
May is one of Binsar's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Small wildlife sanctuary — limited capacity. Weekends in summer get fully booked. Great Himalayan views when clear.
May warms Binsar to 16-25°C — pleasant by plains standards but warm for this altitude. The rhododendron show fades but the forest is dense and green. Summer migratory birds arrive, pushing the species count past 200. The Himalayan views begin their summer retreat behind haze, though early mornings still deliver. Weekend tourism from Delhi peaks. Accommodation books out on Saturdays.
The May story
May Binsar works as a Delhi summer escape — 25°C here versus 45°C there. The forest is dense and shaded, keeping temperatures lower than nearby Almora. Birdwatching remains excellent with summer migrants including cuckoos, flycatchers, and the Indian pitta. The Himalayan views degrade in haze but early morning (before 7am) still delivers partial panoramas. May weekends see Delhi families, school groups, and birdwatching clubs — book ahead. The sanctuary trails are fully open and dry. Evenings at 14-16°C are pleasantly cool. For accommodation, the forest rest houses inside the sanctuary offer the most immersive experience. The 11km loop trail doubles as an evening walk — carry a torch for the return. Binsar's remoteness means no ATMs, limited restaurants, and patchy mobile signal — pack accordingly. This is not a convenience destination.
