Peak Season
Binsar in April
Uttarakhand, India
April is Binsar's rhododendron peak. The entire forest canopy blazes red and pink, carpeting trails with fallen petals. Temperatures at 12-20°C are perfect for the 11km sanctuary trek circuit. Over 200 bird species are in full territorial mode — the dawn chorus at Binsar rivals any in the Himalayas. Nanda Devi and Panchachuli still carry snow. Weekenders from nearby towns start appearing but Binsar's remoteness limits crowds.
The April story
The rhododendron peak at Binsar is genuinely spectacular — forest floors layered in red petals, canopy burning crimson against snow-capped Himalayas behind. Serious photographers should spend two nights minimum. The dawn chorus starts at 4:30am and the sheer density of birdsong is overwhelming — bring a recording app and try to separate the species. The sanctuary harbours 25+ mammal species including leopard, though sightings require patience and dawn/dusk walks with a guide. For a day trip, Jageshwar temple complex (35km) is a cluster of 124 stone temples dating to the 7th century, set in a deodar grove that feels timeless. The walk from Binsar to Gananath temple (12km) through alpine meadows is April's best local trek. Accommodation: Mary Budden Estate (Rs 4000-6000), KMVN (Rs 1200-2000), or several homestays in surrounding villages (Rs 800-1500).
