Binsar in February
Uttarakhand, India
Unpredictable snow and cloud cover may obstruct the views that justify the altitude and cold
February keeps Binsar locked in deep winter. Temperatures hover between -1°C and 10°C. The oak and rhododendron forests are bare enough to offer sightlines usually blocked by foliage. The Himalayan panorama carries its winter sharpness — peaks that disappear in summer haze stand etched against deep blue sky. Birdwatching is excellent: koklass pheasant, khalij pheasant, and forktails are active on the sanctuary trails.
The February story
February's bare forests create photography opportunities impossible in other months — the Himalayan peaks visible through oak branches, leopard trails readable in frost-hardened soil. The sanctuary's wildlife becomes more visible when foliage drops: Himalayan black bear, goral, and barking deer show themselves on morning walks. The birding list for a focused February weekend easily hits 60-70 species. For the Himalayan panorama, February mornings between 6-8am offer the year's clearest conditions — bring a telephoto and tripod. Mary Budden Estate (colonial-era bungalow in the sanctuary) operates year-round with fireplaces and hot water. KMVN guesthouse is cheaper but heating is basic. Almora (28km) has the nearest ATM and medical clinic. The silence at night is total — no traffic, no music, just wind through pine trees and occasionally a leopard's cough.
