Auli in April
Uttarakhand, India
Snow has melted into slush while wildflowers haven't bloomed yet
April melts Auli's snow and reveals vast alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers. The ski infrastructure shuts down, but the cable car keeps running and the Himalayan views are spectacular. Trekking season opens — Gorson Bugyal (meadow) is accessible and stunning.
The April story
April Auli is a revelation for anyone who only thinks of it as a ski resort. The snow retreats uphill, revealing bugyals (alpine meadows) that are among India's most beautiful. Gorson Bugyal, a 3km trek from Auli, is a vast undulating grassland at 3056m with 360-degree Himalayan views. April wildflowers — primula, iris, buttercup — dot the green. The cable car provides effortless access to the starting altitude, and the walks are gentle enough for families. Nanda Devi looks different without snow in the foreground — more imposing, more vertical. The Kuari Pass trek (3-4 days) opens in April and is considered one of India's finest moderate treks. Joshimath is fully operational as a trekking base. April is when Auli proves it's not a one-season destination.
