August continues the monsoon lockdown. Landslides along the Joshimath road are a real risk — the 2023 subsidence crisis highlighted the fragility of this terrain. Auli's slopes are sodden meadow. The mountains exist only in memory and hope. This is not a visitor month.
The August story
August 2023 brought Joshimath's land subsidence crisis to national attention, and the town's geological fragility is a real concern that affects Auli access. In a normal August, the monsoon makes Auli practically unreachable for tourism purposes — heavy rain, landslide risk on the approach road, and zero mountain visibility. The cable car may shut down for maintenance or weather. If you're in the region for Hemkund Sahib pilgrimage (which closes in October), Joshimath is your base, but Auli itself offers nothing in August except wet meadow. The honest recommendation: come back in October or January. August Auli is beautiful in principle and miserable in practice.
