Complete Guide to Kanatal
Weekend escape from Delhi — 300km drive, apple orchards, and Surkanda Devi trek
Destinations in this article
Why Go
Kanatal is a roadside settlement at 2,590m on the Chamba-Mussoorie highway in Uttarakhand, about 78 km from both Dehradun and Mussoorie. It has no town centre, no bazaar, no historical significance, and no natural feature that puts it on a map. What it has: elevation, apple orchards, proximity to Delhi, and an emerging camping/resort industry that has turned a non-destination into a legitimate weekend escape.
The draw is elevation-driven. At 2,590m, Kanatal sits higher than Mussoorie (2,005m), which means cooler summers, crisper air, and snow in winter. The Himalayan views from surrounding ridges are solid — not Binsar-level panoramas but respectable Garhwal ranges.
Two things anchor a Kanatal visit. First, the Surkanda Devi trek — a 2 km uphill walk from a motorable road to a temple at 2,757m, one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. The views from the summit are excellent. Second, the apple orchards — Kanatal and surrounding Kodia Jungle are apple-growing areas, and the orchards in bloom (April) or fruiting (August-September) add charm.
The camping and adventure industry has grown rapidly. Multiple operators offer camps with Swiss tents, rappelling, rock climbing, zip-lining, nature walks, and bonfire evenings. This is structured adventure tourism — not wilderness camping. The camps are professional and well-suited for families and corporate groups.
Kanatal's trump card is the drive from Delhi: 300 km, 7-8 hours via Dehradun and Mussoorie road. That makes it a genuine Friday-evening-to-Sunday-afternoon weekend option.
Best Month to Visit
March to June is peak camping season. March brings the last of winter chill and sometimes late snow. April is apple blossom time — the orchards are beautiful. May-June is warm (15-25 degrees Celsius) with clear views.
September to November is the post-monsoon sweet spot. September is green, October brings autumn colour, November is cold and clear with excellent views.
Avoid July-August. Monsoon makes the Chamba-Mussoorie road dangerous. Landslides are common on this stretch. Most camps close or operate at reduced capacity.
December to February: Snowfall is likely — Kanatal gets 1-3 snowfall events most winters. The camps that stay open offer snow experiences. Temperatures drop to -5 to 5 degrees at night. Magical if you're prepared, miserable if you're not.
How to Get There
From Delhi (300 km, 7-8 hours): Delhi → Dehradun → Mussoorie road → Dhanaulti → Kanatal. The route via Dehradun and Mussoorie bypass is the standard approach. After Mussoorie, the road continues to Dhanaulti (2,286m) and then Kanatal (12 km further).
From Dehradun (78 km, 3 hours): Dehradun → Mussoorie → Dhanaulti → Kanatal. The Mussoorie stretch can be congested on weekends.
From Mussoorie (38 km, 1.5 hours): Mussoorie → Dhanaulti → Kanatal. Road is narrow but scenic.
From Rishikesh (75 km, 3 hours): Via Chamba → Kanatal. An alternative route that avoids Mussoorie traffic.
Nearest railhead: Dehradun (78 km) or Rishikesh (75 km).
Local transport: None. You need your own vehicle or camp-arranged transport. Most camps offer pickup from Dehradun/Rishikesh at extra cost.
Infrastructure Reality
Mobile/Internet: Jio and Airtel work along the main road. BSNL available. Coverage is better than most Uttarakhand offbeat destinations because the highway itself is well-connected. Camps offer WiFi of variable quality.
ATMs: None in Kanatal. Nearest in Dhanaulti (12 km) or Chamba (25 km). Carry cash.
Medical: No medical facility in Kanatal. Nearest in Dhanaulti or Chamba. For serious cases, Mussoorie (38 km) or Dehradun (78 km). The camps generally have basic first-aid.
Accommodation: Camp-driven economy. Swiss tent camps (Rs 2,500-6,000 per person including meals and activities), a few resorts and hotels (Rs 3,000-8,000), and GMVN rest house. The camps are the primary product — most include meals, activities, and bonfire. Quality ranges from excellent to mediocre. Research specific operators.
Food: Mostly within camps/resorts (included in packages). A few dhabas on the highway. No independent restaurant scene. If self-driving, carry snacks.
Power: Available. Camps have generators. No reliability concerns.
Kids Verdict: 4/5
Kanatal is one of the best offbeat family destinations in Uttarakhand. The structured camps are designed for families — adventure activities (rappelling, zip-lining, rock climbing) are supervised and age-appropriate. Nature walks are gentle. Apple orchards are engaging for kids. Surkanda Devi trek (2 km) is manageable for ages 6+.
The elevation is comfortable — no AMS risk. Snow in winter is a bonus for kids. The drive from Delhi is long but entirely on decent roads. Medical backup via Dehradun is relatively accessible.
Challenges: limited free-range exploration (camp-based experience), rainy days have few alternatives, and the camps vary in quality — research before booking.
Best for: Families with kids 4+ wanting a structured nature weekend from Delhi. Excellent for first-time camping families. The adventure activities give kids something to do beyond "look at the view."
The Bottom Line
Kanatal is honest about what it is: an elevation-based weekend escape with camping infrastructure. It doesn't pretend to be a historic hill station or a wilderness adventure. The camps deliver what they promise — tents, activities, food, and mountain air. Surkanda Devi adds a trekking element, apple orchards add seasonal charm, and the 300 km drive from Delhi makes the logistics work. It's not a destination that inspires poetry, but it's a destination that inspires repeat bookings.
