Complete Guide to Chakrata
Dehradun's secret hill station — Tiger Falls, Deoban forest, and no Mall Road

Why Go
Chakrata exists because the British needed a cantonment away from Mussoorie's social distractions. They chose this ridge at 2,118m in the Jaunsar-Bawar region of Uttarakhand, built their barracks, and left it alone. The Indian Army inherited the cantonment. And because the army presence limited commercial development, Chakrata never became Mussoorie.
No Mall Road. No ropeways. No traffic jams. What Chakrata has instead: Tiger Falls (a genuine 312-foot cascade, one of the highest direct-drop waterfalls in India), Deoban (a viewpoint at 2,900m with 180-degree Himalayan panorama and dense deodar forest), Budher Caves (limestone formations with mild adventure potential), and the kind of silence that Mussoorie lost 30 years ago.
The town itself is tiny — a bazaar, a few shops, army buildings, and pine trees. The surrounding forest is dense and largely uninhabited. The Tons River (a Yamuna tributary) flows through the valley below, offering some of Uttarakhand's best rafting.
Chakrata's killer advantage is proximity. It's 90 km from Dehradun (3 hours) and 340 km from Delhi (7-8 hours). As a weekend escape, it competes with Mussoorie and Lansdowne but beats both on tranquility.
The Jaunsar-Bawar tribal region surrounding Chakrata has its own cultural identity — distinct architecture (slate-roof houses), festivals, and traditions. The area was historically isolated and retains a character you won't find in commercialised hill stations.
Best Month to Visit
**March to June** is the primary season. March is cool with clear views. April-May brings warmth (15-25 degrees) and the forest is at its greenest. June is warm but pleasant at 2,118m.
**September to November** is excellent. Post-monsoon clarity makes Deoban views sharpest. October-November brings autumn colour. Crowds are minimal.
**Avoid July-August.** Monsoon makes Tiger Falls trail slippery and dangerous. Leeches appear. The Chakrata road gets landslide-prone in heavy rain.
**Winter (December-February):** Chakrata gets snowfall, usually light (10-30 cm). The town looks magical in snow. Roads remain open most of the time but Deoban may be inaccessible. Temperatures drop to -2 to 5 degrees at night. Carry warm gear.
How to Get There
**From Delhi (340 km, 7-8 hours):** Delhi → Roorkee/Saharanpur → Dehradun → Mussoorie bypass → Chakrata. Alternatively, take the direct route via Vikasnagar from Dehradun, which avoids the Mussoorie road entirely and is faster.
**From Dehradun (90 km, 3 hours):** Dehradun → Vikasnagar → Sahiya → Chakrata. The road climbs steadily through sal forest and then pine. Good tarmac most of the way, with a few narrow stretches near Sahiya.
**From Mussoorie (80 km, 3 hours):** Via Yamuna Bridge road. Scenic but narrow in places. Not recommended at night.
**Nearest railhead:** Dehradun (90 km). Daily Shatabdi from Delhi.
**Nearest airport:** Jolly Grant, Dehradun (120 km, 4 hours).
**Local transport:** Limited. A few local taxis available in Chakrata town. For Tiger Falls (22 km), Deoban (16 km), and Budher Caves (28 km), you need your own vehicle or a hired taxi. No Uber/Ola.
Infrastructure Reality
**Mobile/Internet:** Jio and Airtel work in Chakrata town. BSNL is available. Coverage drops on the Deoban road and around Tiger Falls. Workable for basic communication but don't plan video calls.
**ATMs:** One or two ATMs in Chakrata town (SBI, PNB). They work most of the time. Carry backup cash.
**Medical:** Army hospital exists but may not treat civilians for all cases. Small government dispensary in town. For serious medical needs, Dehradun (90 km, 3 hours) is the option. Carry a first-aid kit.
**Accommodation:** GMVN rest house, a growing number of homestays and camps (Rs 1,000-4,000 range), and a few resort-style properties on the approach road. Quality has improved significantly in recent years. Weekend availability April-June requires advance booking.
**Food:** Small restaurants in the bazaar — north Indian staples. A few camps and homestays offer good home-cooked meals. No cafe culture. Carry snacks for day trips to Tiger Falls and Deoban.
**Power:** Reasonably reliable. Occasional outages. Most accommodations have backup power.
Kids Verdict: 4/5
Chakrata is one of the better offbeat options for families. Tiger Falls is a genuine spectacle that kids love (the 1 km descent to the falls is manageable for ages 5+, but the climb back up is steep). The forest walks are engaging — bird sightings, pine cones, occasional langur troops. Deoban viewpoint is accessible by vehicle with a short walk. Some camps offer activities like rappelling and zip-lining for older kids.
The moderate altitude (2,118m) means no AMS risk. The 3-hour drive from Dehradun is manageable. Accommodation options are better than most offbeat destinations. Medical backup in Dehradun is relatively close.
Challenges: no structured kids' programs, Tiger Falls descent requires supervision, limited indoor entertainment for rainy days.
Best for: Families with kids 4+ who want nature without extreme remoteness. Excellent weekend option from Delhi/Dehradun.
The Bottom Line
Chakrata is what Mussoorie would be if you rewound 40 years and the Mall Road never happened. The cantonment preserved what commercialisation destroyed elsewhere. Tiger Falls alone is worth the drive — it's a genuinely impressive waterfall in a state full of mediocre ones. Deoban's panorama competes with Nag Tibba views at a fraction of the effort. And the 3-hour proximity to Dehradun makes this a realistic weekend trip, not an expedition. Go before the resorts arrive.
