Where rivers run clear enough to see the bottom

The wettest state in India — Mawsynram and Cherrapunji (Sohra) trade the world-rainfall record annually. Living root bridges grown by the Khasi over 100+ years (Nongriat); the Garo, Khasi and Jaintia tribes are matrilineal; Mawlynnong is signed as Asia's cleanest village; Shnongpdeng's Umngot River runs glass-clear in the dry season; Dawki is the Bangladesh border crossing. The plateau averages 1,500 m. October–April is the dry window; monsoon turns the falls spectacular but the trails dangerous. 9 destinations across the state.
