Hundred Drums Wangala Festival (Asanang, 2nd Week of November).
The festival itself is well-known but the Asanang site is empty 358 days a year, and the cultural complex with its drum gallery and Garo artefact museum is open year-round with almost no visitors. Tour operators skip November-shoulder dates and never market off-season Asanang.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
The Garo post-harvest thanksgiving festival to Misi Saljong (sun-god), held annually since 1976 at Asanang — the Rongram Development Block HQ 18 km north of Tura. Hundred dancers, each beating a hand-shaped dama drum slung on the hip, perform a 4-day cycle of Wangala dances in traditional do'korong (turban) and rikgitok (feather crown). The festival is the largest tribal music event in the Northeast and attracts 50,000+ visitors over the four days; the rest of the year Asanang is a quiet administrative town with a cultural complex that hosts smaller drum-dance demonstrations on request.
