Double Decker Living Root Bridge — only accessible by 3,500-step trek down into the valley. World-famous natural wonder grown by Khasi tribe over centuries.
Why Special
Nongriat is home to the Double Decker Living Root Bridge, a UNESCO-tentative natural wonder created by the Khasi tribe over 150-200 years by training the aerial roots of Ficus elastica trees across streams. The double-decker structure is the only one of its kind in the world. Reaching it requires descending approximately 3,500 stone steps from Tyrna village into a deep valley — and climbing back up the same steps to return. There is no road access. Basic homestays in Nongriat village offer overnight stays, which is the recommended approach (climbing 3,500 steps after the trek down is brutal in one day). A natural swimming pool with a waterfall sits near the bridge. The village has no ATM, no cell network, and no medical facility — the nearest hospital is in Cherrapunji, 12 km away by road from Tyrna. This is not a casual tourist stop; it is a genuine trek.
