The Zanskar River in snowmelt flow is powerful and brown. The fields are being prepared for the single annual crop (barley, wheat, peas — the growing season is only 4-5 months). May Zanskar is frontier India: basic infrastructure, limited food options, no reliable phone signal, and the particular energy of a place that has been cut off from the world for six months. Hotels in Padum: ₹500-1,500, basic. The road from Kargil (240km, 10-12 hours) is an adventure in itself.
