July Zanskar is at its most alive. The fields are green. The Zanskar River runs blue-green through the brown gorge. The monasteries are in their active season — morning pujas, afternoon debates, evening chanting. The Gustor festival (dates vary, July or August) at Karsha features monks in elaborate masks performing Cham dances that depict the triumph of Buddhism over evil spirits. The dances are genuine ritual, not tourist performance — the monks prepare for weeks. Phuktal Monastery in July is a 2-day trek each way through a gorge that narrows to single-path width above the river. The monastery's cave setting, with monks in maroon robes against rock and prayer flags, is one of India's most powerful religious images. July accommodation in Padum: ₹800-2,000 for the handful of guesthouses. The Padum-Darcha road may be open, creating a through route from Zanskar to Manali via Shingo La.
