His birthday (August-September, date varies with lunar calendar) is the town's defining annual event. The midnight celebrations — temples packed to impossible density, devotional singing reaching fever pitch at the stroke of midnight, the deity bathed in milk and honey, the crowd erupting in ecstasy — are India's most intense religious experience. The ISKCON temple organizes a massive international celebration. The Banke Bihari temple is a human ocean. The Pagal Baba temple's widows' Janmashtami is poignant beyond words.
