Umlingla in April
Ladakh, India
April: the Changthang thaws but Umling La remains blocked. Snow clearance on the approach road from Hanle begins. The pass itself is deep under snow. Even reaching Hanle (4,500m) is uncertain. The BRO works upward from lower bases. Summer is still 2-3 months away.
The April story
Road still closed. April is booking time. Leh-based operators (Explore Ladakh, Overland Escape, Hidden North) run Umling La expeditions July-September. Costs: ₹15,000-25,000 per person for 3-day all-inclusive from Leh. Solo vehicle hire: ₹6,000-10,000/day for Innova or Scorpio with driver. The driver matters enormously — experience on Changthang roads, altitude awareness, mechanical competence. The PAP (Protected Area Permit) covers the Hanle-Umling La area and can be arranged through the operator or DC office in Leh (₹600, 24-48 hours processing). Book July for best conditions. The permit requires minimum 2 persons (solo permits not issued for Changthang). Factor in Hanle for stargazing — the observatory is one of the clearest-sky locations on earth.
