Sonamarg in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
January: Sonamarg is buried under 3-6 metres of snow. The 'Meadow of Gold' is a white expanse at 2,800m. The road from Srinagar (80km) is closed at Gagangir. The Thajiwas Glacier is inaccessible. Zoji La (the pass to Ladakh) is blocked. The military presence continues — this is a strategic corridor — but tourist infrastructure is shut. Sonamarg in January exists only in summer photographs.
The January story
No access. Sonamarg is sealed under winter. Use January to plan your visit: the road from Srinagar is scenic (80km, 3 hours through the Sindh Valley), the meadow is best in June or September, and the Thajiwas Glacier walk is the headline activity. The Z-Morh tunnel (under construction/recently opened) may eventually provide year-round access, changing Sonamarg from a seasonal destination to an all-year one. Check construction status. Until then, January is for dreaming of golden meadows.
