Sonamarg means Meadow of Gold — named for the golden wildflowers that carpet the valley in spring. At 2,740m, it is the last major stop on the Kashmir side before the Zoji La pass leading to Ladakh. It was historically a crucial stop on the ancient Silk Route. The Thajiwas Glacier, accessible by a short pony ride, is a major attraction. Sonamarg is also the base for the trek to the sacred Amarnath Cave.
