The Kashmir side is temperate forest (pine, deodar, walnut). The pass zone is alpine meadow. The Kishtwar side drops through arid terrain to the Chenab river. The entire drive can be done in one long day (10-12 hours) but deserves an overnight at Daksum on the way up. No organised tours operate this route — you need a private vehicle with a mountain-experienced driver.
