Rudraprayag in August
Uttarakhand, India
August continues heavy monsoon — another 300-350mm. The rivers are at maximum power. Landslides can isolate sections of the highway for hours or days. The Char Dham yatra persists through it all — the devotion that drives pilgrims through these conditions is remarkable. The Koteshwar cave temple floods in extreme years. Rudraprayag town itself is on higher ground and relatively safe, but the roads in and out are the vulnerability.
The August story
August is July's continuation — heavy rain, swollen rivers, landslide-prone roads. The Char Dham yatra somehow persists, testament to devotion that non-pilgrims may struggle to understand. The Mandakini can rise 3-5 metres above normal in extreme events. Independence Day passes with flags on government buildings and genuine pride in the rebuilt infrastructure. For non-pilgrim travellers, August Rudraprayag has very little to offer beyond monsoon drama. The Koteshwar temple may be water-affected. Roads to both Kedarnath and Badrinath face unpredictable closures. If you must be here, carry emergency supplies and expect delays.
