Roopkund in August
Uttarakhand, India
August is peak monsoon — Roopkund is closed for all practical purposes. Rainfall batters the trail, streams become torrents, and the high-altitude sections are shrouded in cloud. Landslides on the Lohajung road are common. The few trekkers who attempt it face dangerous conditions. The skeleton lake itself is rain-lashed and often snow-covered again from fresh precipitation.
The August story
August is the worst month for Roopkund. Continuous rain, active landslides on approach roads, and dangerous conditions above treeline. The skeleton lake is invisible under cloud and fresh snow. Even reaching Lohajung can be problematic — the road from Rishikesh through Karnaprayag to Debal involves multiple landslide-prone sections during peak monsoon. Any trekking company operating Roopkund in August is either irresponsible or doesn't exist. The skeletons have survived 1,200 years; they can wait for October.
