Rann of Kutch in May
Gujarat, India
Skip — May Rann is the worst month. Wait for November.
May in the Rann is the heat ceiling. Daytime 44-47C across the open desert, the white salt flat a blazing oven, all outdoor activity dangerous beyond brief 5:30am-7:30am windows, and the destination essentially closed.
The May story
May is the Rann of Kutch at its absolute worst. The Kutch desert summer pushes daytime temperatures to 44-47C with very low humidity and intense direct sun. The white salt flat reflects sunlight upward and there is no shade for 50 km in any direction. Heat exhaustion sets in within 15-20 minutes for unacclimated visitors on the open flat. The Rann Utsav has been closed three months. The GTDC Tent City is packed down. Hodka Shaam-e-Sarhad and Rann Riders operate at very reduced occupancy primarily for researchers. Kala Dungar viewpoint is unsafe to visit beyond pre-7am. The pre-monsoon dust storms ('lu') roll in unpredictably. Hotel power load on AC is extreme and outages occur. Hotel rates are at annual lows but no leisure rationale justifies the trade-off. The dramatic late-May pre-monsoon sky can deliver striking storm-cloud photography but the heat penalty makes even this proposition borderline reckless. Wait for November.
