Nubra Valley in November
Ladakh, India
November closes Nubra for the season. Khardung La is effectively shut. The valley's permanent residents prepare for 5 months of isolation. Temperatures: -12°C to 2°C. The Bactrian camels are in full winter coat. The last golden leaves fall from the poplars. Tourism ends.
The November story
November Nubra is theoretical for tourists—Khardung La is blocked, the camps are dismantled, and the valley enters hibernation. A few hardy travelers who were already in Nubra when early November snow blocked the pass find themselves in an extraordinary situation: trapped in one of the world's most beautiful valleys with no way out except waiting. The army maintains the road on their side, and evacuation is possible through military channels, but the experience of being snowed in at Nubra—with the dunes, the camels, and the vast silence—converts the stranded into the devoted. Diskit's monks, Hunder's families, and Turtuk's Balti community simply continue living, unfazed by what tourists consider a crisis.
