Nubra Valley in February
Ladakh, India
February keeps Nubra sealed. Khardung La remains impassable. The valley exists in deep winter isolation. Temperatures: -18°C to -6°C. The Shyok River, usually a braided channel across the wide valley, freezes in sections. Diskit Monastery's Dosmoche festival may fall in February—one of Ladakh's most important monastic events.
The February story
If Dosmoche falls in February, Diskit Monastery comes alive with masked cham dances despite the cold. Monks in elaborate costumes perform rituals to drive out evil spirits for the new year. The few hundred villagers attend in their warmest clothes. This is Ladakh's most authentic festival atmosphere because no tourists can reach it. The 32m Maitreya Buddha at Diskit, facing down the valley toward Pakistan, is a post-1962-war symbol of peace. In February frost, it stands as perhaps the most dramatically situated Buddha statue in India. But reaching Nubra in February requires either being already here (wintering) or air access. The Hunder dunes, the camels, and Turtuk are all technically present but practically inaccessible.
