Morni Hills in January
Haryana, India
January Morni Hills is Haryana's cold secret. At 1220m—the only hill station in a mostly flat state—temperatures of 4-14°C keep Chandigarh's weekend crowd away. The twin lakes (Tikkar Taal) sit still and reflective. The pine forest trails are empty. Morning frost coats the grass. It's the quietest escape within 45 km of Chandigarh.
The January story
Morni Hills exists because the Shivalik foothills push just high enough to create a micro-hill-station experience for the Punjab-Haryana plains. January strips it to basics: the twin lakes, a handful of walking trails through chir pine forest, and views across the Ghaggar River valley. The Adventure Park (zip-lining, rope courses) is closed or barely operational, which is actually a relief—Morni is better without manufactured activities. The Morni Fort ruins, a 4 km walk from the lakes, date to the Gurkha period and are atmospherically overgrown. For birding, the Morni forests have grey-capped woodpeckers, white-throated laughingthrushes, and kalij pheasants. Accommodation is limited to a Haryana Tourism hotel and a few private guesthouses—all basic, all available.
