Peak Season
Lamayuru in June
Ladakh, India
June is peak season's opening act. Tour groups start appearing on the Leh-Srinagar highway, but Lamayuru still gets a fraction of Leh's crowds. Days are warm (15-25°C), nights cool (5-8°C). The monastery's annual masked dance festival—Yuru Kabgyat—typically falls in June or July. This two-day spectacle is the highlight of Lamayuru's calendar.
The June story
If Yuru Kabgyat falls in June (check Tibetan calendar dates), you absolutely want to be here. Monks in elaborate brocade costumes and fearsome masks perform ritual cham dances in the monastery courtyard. The entire village turns out, and traders set up stalls selling everything from dried apricots to turquoise jewelry. Even without the festival, June offers the best combination of weather and accessibility. The moonscape photography is extraordinary in late afternoon light. All guesthouses and restaurants operate. The Prinkiti La viewpoint above the monastery—a 45-minute climb—gives you the iconic aerial shot of the monastery perched on its eroded pinnacle.
