Keylong in April
Himachal Pradesh, India
April warms Keylong to -2 to 12°C. Snow melts from the town and lower valley. The Bhaga river swells with snowmelt. Kardang Monastery is accessible on foot (30-minute climb from the valley floor). The town starts its seasonal awakening — shops restock, hotels prepare, and the road workers begin clearing routes to Udaipur (Lahaul) and beyond. The Atal Tunnel route from Manali is comfortable.
The April story
April Keylong in thaw is a specific experience — water everywhere, brown earth emerging from white, and a valley shaking itself awake. Kardang Monastery is a comfortable 30-minute climb from the valley and rewards with valley views and monastery atmosphere. The Atal Tunnel route from Manali is easy. The road to Udaipur (Lahaul) starts clearing — if open, the Markula Devi temple (9th century wooden carvings) is one of Himachal's great hidden treasures. The town of Keylong itself is small (population ~2000) and functional rather than beautiful — its value is as a base for valley exploration. April accommodation: Rs 1000-2000. Restaurants open. For the first time since October, Keylong feels like a place visitors might intentionally come rather than pass through. The Bhaga valley in snowmelt — waterfalls from every cliff, the river wild — has a kinetic energy that summer's calm doesn't match.
