Karaikal in January is the version pilgrims and quiet-coast travellers wait the year for. Thirunallar Sri Saneeswara Bagwan Temple — one of nine Navagraha temples and the country's primary Saturn-deity site — runs darshan 6am-12:30pm and 4-8:30pm. Saturdays draw 25,000-40,000 pilgrims; queues form by 5:30am at the Nala Theertham tank for the ritual bath that precedes darshan. Special Saturday Sani-Pradosham nights pull 50,000-plus and Karaikal-Thirunallar 4km transport bottlenecks; arrive Friday afternoon if dates fall on a Saturday. Nagore Dargah Sharif (14km from Karaikal, 20 minutes by bus or auto), built around the 16th-century Sufi saint Shahul Hamid, opens 4:30am-7am and 6:25pm-9:30pm with Friday additionally open 12-2:30pm. The Thursday-evening qawwali sessions are the under-the-radar standout. Karaikal beach and the Saint Theresa shrine round out a 2-day visit. ATMs at Karaikal main bus stand and the temple complex.
