Gir National Park in May
Gujarat, India
Wait — May is last pre-closure window with brutal heat; January-April better.
May at Gir: 27-42C, extreme heat but lion sightings peak as the dry-forest waterholes shrink to handful of locations. Forest Dept safaris run 5:30-8:30am only (last comfortable slot before closure). Devalia operates dawn-only. The end of the safari season before Jun 16 closure.
The May story
May is Gir's last safari month before the Jun 16 monsoon closure — extreme heat at 27-42C compresses the safari window to pre-9am, but the lion concentration story is at its peak. Every surviving waterhole becomes a near-guaranteed sighting location. Photographers chase this exactly: the dry, parched, dusty Gir is the iconic Gir that international wildlife media documents. The trade-off is brutal: 42C jeep heat, dust storms, and a forest that visually feels post-apocalyptic. Last permits before Jun 16 closure are highly sought-after — book in February-March. After the May safari window, Gir shuts for 4 months until Oct 16. Sasan-area lodge stays continue (off-season rates) for wildlife enthusiasts willing to do peripheral walks during the closure.
