The October story
October is Gangotri's farewell month. The Himalayan panorama is at maximum clarity — Bhagirathi I, II, and III, Shivling, Meru, and Kedarnath dome all visible in crystalline air. The Gaumukh trek in October is the most visually rewarding of the year: the glacier face stark against blue sky, the birch forests golden, the river clear. Pilgrims making last-chance visits create a poignant atmosphere — everyone knows the temple closes on Diwali. The closing ceremony itself (Diwali day) is deeply moving: final prayers, the murti ceremonially wrapped and placed on a palanquin for the journey to Mukhba, and the priest locking the doors on an empty temple that won't open for six months. If you can be present for closure, do. The cold is serious — 0 to 10°C during the day, well below freezing at night near Gaumukh. Full winter trekking gear is essential for the Gaumukh trek. Accommodation in town: limited and winding down. Carry extra food — supply deliveries thin through October.
