Gangotri in July
Uttarakhand, India
Landslides frequently block the only road in and out during July's monsoon season
July monsoon hits Gangotri hard — 200-300mm of rain, landslides on the access road, and frequent disruptions to the pilgrimage flow. The temple stays open (priests are committed) but reaching it becomes the challenge. The Bhagirathi river roars with monsoon and glacial meltwater. The Gaumukh trek is officially open but practically risky — river crossings swell and trails wash out. Cloud cover hides the peaks.
The July story
July is Gangotri for the devout, not the casual. Pilgrims continue coming despite road closures and landslide delays because the spiritual calculus overrides the practical. The temple's daily rituals — dawn aarti at 6:15am, evening aarti at 6:30pm — continue regardless of how many people are present. The river is at maximum power: the Bhagirathi thundering through its gorge is genuinely awe-inspiring. The Gaumukh trek is officially open but practically inadvisable without experienced guides and monsoon gear — river crossings become dangerous, trail sections wash away, and the glacier area receives heavy snowfall. If you do trek, Bhojbasa camp can be flooded. For non-trekkers, the temple and its immediate surroundings (riverside walks, Kedar Ganga sangam) offer enough for 1-2 days. Carry waterproofs, dry bags for electronics, and flexibility — road closures of 6-24 hours are normal. Basic accommodation: Rs 200-500 at ashrams.
