Ellora Caves in June
Maharashtra, India
Skip June unless flexibility — first half hot, second half monsoon onset; Nov-Feb the better window.
June at Ellora is the season turning — first 2 weeks plateau-summer (25-38°C, dust-haze, Kailasa courtyard furnace), then the South-West monsoon onset around Jun 15-20 brings 22-30°C relief plus modest Deccan green emerging on Charanandri Hills. Cave interiors stay cool; Kailasa courtyard cools post-onset but floods briefly in heavy rain bursts. Basalt cave-floor stones slippery wet. The 34-cave circuit becomes workable post-Jun-20 with caution. Closed Tuesday.
The June story
Time visit to post-Jun-20 if at all. Pre-monsoon first half: skip. Post-onset: Cave 16 Kailasa Temple gains atmospheric monsoon cloud-and-basalt photography, the Buddhist Cave 10 Vishwakarma chaitya stays dry inside, Hindu Cave 14, 15 Ravan-ki-Khai and Dashavatara panels viewable. Carry waterproof shoes for wet basalt floors. ASI ticket ₹40/₹600. Aurangabad 30 km away as base — Vivanta, Welcomhotel, Lemon Tree at mid-rates as June progresses. Hotel rates climb late month into July monsoon-shoulder. Driving NH-211 30 km between Aurangabad and Ellora dries briefly between bursts. ASI hours 9am-5:30pm. Photography: post-Jun-20 monsoon cloud light on Kailasa's yellow-grey basalt facade is unusual and rewarding for those willing to risk weather. Combine with Daulatabad 13 km from Aurangabad — but Daulatabad climb dangerous wet basalt steps until post-Jun-25 when 2-3 dry days cluster.
