March is the last comfortable month for Elephanta before ferry suspension. Temperatures climb to 22-33°C, the Arabian Sea stays calm enough for the launch to run its full 9:30am-2pm schedule, but the basalt-steps and exposed plateau heat up sharply between 11am and 4pm. The MMB rule that suspends ferry from Apr 30 to ~Sep 15 doesn't hit yet, so March still offers full access; the trade-off is heat. Holi falls Tue Mar 3 — many local boatmen take the day off; check schedules. Buddha Purnima isn't until May 26 so no Buddhist-cave pilgrim pulse yet.

Take the earliest ferry — 9:30am from Gateway, ideally on a weekday for empty caves. Aim to be on the island by 11am, in the Trimurti chamber 11am-noon, out of the caves by 12:30pm, back on the launch by 1pm — the afternoon climb is genuinely uncomfortable after 1:30pm. Bring 2L water minimum; canteen on island basic. ASI ticket ₹40 Indian, ₹600 foreign; ferry ₹190 RT first-class. Grippy shoes mandatory — 120 stair climb plus uneven plateau. Don't plan a late-morning departure thinking you'll catch the 11:30am or 12:45pm — by the time you arrive the climb is brutal. Combine with Mumbai Fort circuit on the same day — start with Elephanta at 9:30am, finish at Kala Ghoda by 4pm.
