Chitrakoot in February
Uttar Pradesh, India
February warms Chitrakoot to 12-28°C. The Mandakini river runs clear, the deciduous forest around Sati Anusuya ashram shows early spring green, and Maha Shivaratri (usually February-March) brings the first major pilgrim surge.
The February story
If Shivaratri falls in February, Chitrakoot transforms. Ram Ghat fills with oil lamps at dusk, the evening aarti draws thousands, and the Mandakini reflects more flames than stars. It is one of India's most intimate large-scale religious experiences because the setting — a river bend backed by forested hills — contains the crowd naturally. Outside Shivaratri, February is excellent for the Kamadgiri parikrama at dawn, the Sphatik Shila (crystal rock where Sita's footprints are venerated), and the Janki Kund bathing ghat. The forest walks to Sati Anusuya peak in late February wildflowers. Rooms: ₹400-1,500/night (spike during Shivaratri).
