Caution
Bhaderwah in December
Jammu & Kashmir, India
December is deep winter. Snow arrives at town level, the surrounding valleys white out, and Bhaderwah becomes the quiet mountain settlement it has been for centuries. The bazaar sells walnuts, dried rajma, and saffron stored from October's harvest. Silence rules.
The December story
December completes Bhaderwah's annual cycle. Snow blankets the town, the Jai and Chinta Valleys become white meadows, and the only sounds are the Neeru river and the occasional tinkle of livestock bells. The bazaar sells winter provisions: dried morels (guchhi), walnuts, rajma, and saffron strands from October's harvest. A small bag of Bhaderwah saffron makes an extraordinary souvenir. The guesthouses that remain open have wood fires and heavy blankets. The road from Jammu is usually passable but conditions deteriorate with each snowfall. December Bhaderwah is the same proposition as January: winter mountain quiet for those who find peace in cold air, simple food, and the company of people who chose to live at the edge of the Pir Panjal. It's not for everyone. It's absolutely for someone.
