Peak Season
Bangus Valley in June
Jammu & Kashmir, India
June is when Bangus Valley becomes genuinely accessible. The meadow unfurls — 30 square kilometres of alpine grassland ringed by 4000m peaks, with wildflowers beginning to carpet the valley floor. Gujjar shepherds arrive with livestock. The permit system is operational.
The June story
June opens the Bangus season properly. The meadow is accessible from both Handwara and Kupwara approaches, the Gujjar shepherds have established their seasonal camps (they're friendly and sometimes share chai), and the wildflower bloom begins in earnest. The valley floor at 3000m is a vast green carpet ringed by snow-capped peaks — Shamsbari range to the north, pine-forested ridges to the south. There is no other place in Kashmir that feels this untouched. No guesthouses, no roads, no phone towers, no shops. Just meadow, mountains, shepherds, and sky. June temperatures: 5-20°C. Nights require proper sleeping bags. Streams provide water (purify it). The permit system works, guides know the routes, and the weather is generally stable. June is Bangus for first-timers. Experienced or not, your first Bangus visit will reset your idea of what Kashmir can be.
