Peak Season
Alchi in July
Ladakh, India
July is peak Ladakh season. Tour buses visit Alchi as a day trip from Leh. The monastery sees its highest footfall — which still means fewer visitors than a slow Tuesday at Hemis. The murals survive the attention. The village sells apricots and cold drinks.
The July story
July's crowds are relative — Alchi never becomes Thiksey or Hemis. But you will share the monastery with organized tour groups, and the temples are small enough that 10 people feels crowded. The upside: the village is fully operational, guesthouses serve meals, and the surrounding landscape is at its greenest. Barley fields glow golden-green, apricot trees are heavy with fruit, and the Indus runs full. The monastery's five temples warrant at least 3-4 hours of slow exploration. Don't rush the Sumtsek — the three-storey bodhisattvas with their painted robes depicting Persian and Central Asian motifs are genuinely among Asia's greatest artistic treasures. Buy fresh apricots from village families on your way out.
