# Paragliding in Bir Billing
Bir Billing is the paragliding capital of India and hosted the 2015 Paragliding World Cup. The takeoff site at Billing (2,400m) and landing site at Bir (1,525m) create an 875m altitude difference over a 14km glide through the Kangra Valley with Dhauladhar peaks as your backdrop.
Tandem vs Solo
Tandem (passenger): No experience needed. You sit in a harness attached to a certified pilot. Flight duration 15-25 minutes depending on thermals. Rs 2,500-3,500 including GoPro video. This is what 95% of visitors do.
Solo (licensed): Requires P2 certification minimum. Local clubs rent equipment. Thermals are strong March-June and September-November. Cross-country flights of 50km+ are possible for experienced pilots.
Best Months
March-June: Strongest thermals. Longest flights (up to 45 minutes on good days). Best for experienced pilots. Tandem flights reach maximum altitude.
September-November: Clear post-monsoon skies. Best photography conditions. Dhauladhar range fully visible. Slightly calmer thermals than spring.
July-August: Risky. Monsoon clouds and unpredictable winds. Most operators suspend flights. Do not fly with anyone who offers monsoon flights.
December-February: Cold but flyable. Shorter flights due to weaker thermals. Less crowded. Clear winter skies.
The Landing Experience
You land in an open field in Bir. The tea gardens surrounding the landing zone are beautiful. After landing, the Bir market has Tibetan restaurants (Bir has a significant Tibetan settlement) and cafes.
What to Know Before Booking
Book directly with operators at Billing takeoff site, not through hotel agents in Bir who add 30-40% commission. Reputable operators: Billing Paragliding Association members display their certification.
Weight limit: 120kg combined (pilot + passenger). If you are over 90kg, mention it when booking — larger wings are needed.
Morning flights (7-9 AM) are calmer. Afternoon flights (12-3 PM) have stronger thermals and more turbulence — more exciting but rougher.

Is Manali safe for solo female travellers? Which Manali, and when
Manali is not one place. New Manali is a respectable hill town — 4/5 safe. Old Manali is the Himachal backpacker-cafe strip with party + drug scene — 2/5 after 10pm. McLeodganj 3 hours away holds 5/5 year-round. Pick deliberately.
