Tso Moriri in May
Ladakh, India
Road access blocked by snow until late May or early June
May: Tso Moriri is transitioning. The lake ice breaks up — a dramatic process of cracking, floating, and melting that transforms the white expanse into blue water over weeks. The road from Leh may be passable in the second half but conditions are uncertain. The first Changpa nomad camps appear. The black-necked cranes — Tso Moriri's most celebrated residents — begin arriving. Temperatures at -5 to 12°C. This is frontier Ladakh.
The May story
Late May Tso Moriri breaking free from ice is one of Ladakh's great natural spectacles. The lake doesn't simply melt — it cracks, separates into floating ice plates, and gradually reveals the deep blue water beneath. The contrast between white ice and blue water shifts daily. The first black-necked cranes arrive — their distinctive honking echoing across the plateau announces the season. The Changpa camps appear as if materializing from the landscape. The road from Leh is opening but remains rough. Accommodation at Korzok (3-4 homestays, ₹1,000-2,000, basic but warm) is available. May Tso Moriri is for the early-season adventurer who wants to see Ladakh's secret lake at its most dramatic transition. Bring warm gear — -5°C nights are standard.
