Tso Moriri in January
Ladakh, India
January: Tso Moriri is frozen and closed. The lake at 4,522m is under ice. The road from Leh is blocked by snow. The Changpa nomads who camp here in summer are in their winter pastures. Temperatures at -25 to -15°C. The Changthang plateau is one of the coldest inhabited places on earth. No access, no services, no visitors. The lake exists in photographs and patience.
The January story
No access. Tso Moriri is Pangong's quiet twin — fewer visitors, more wildlife, and a stillness that the more famous lake can't match. While Pangong gets 500+ daily visitors in peak season, Tso Moriri sees maybe 20-30. The difference is transformative. The lake is a Ramsar wetland site — internationally recognized for the black-necked crane breeding population, bar-headed geese (which fly over Everest on migration), and Changpa nomadic culture. The Protected Area Permit (₹600, available from DC office in Leh) is required. The road from Leh goes via Upshi and the Chumur/Mahe route — 220km, 7-8 hours on largely unpaved roads. No fuel stations after Upshi. Carry spare fuel, food, water, and altitude medication. Accommodation at the lake is limited to a few homestays at Korzok village (₹1,000-2,000, basic) and camping. Plan for June-September. The preparation is the price; the lake is the reward.
