Tso Moriri in March
Ladakh, India
Road access remains blocked by snow; BRO hasn't begun clearance yet
March: still frozen, still closed. The BRO begins thinking about road clearance but the Tso Moriri route (via Chumur or Mahe) is among the last to clear in Ladakh. The Changpa nomads start their seasonal migration patterns. The lake under ice is a white expanse on the plateau. March at 4,522m in Ladakh is still deep winter by any measure.
The March story
Frozen, closed. The logistics matter: Tso Moriri requires a 4x4 vehicle (₹5,000-8,000/day from Leh), Protected Area Permit (arranged through tour operator or DC office), camping or homestay gear, and altitude acclimatization. Most visitors combine Tso Moriri with Tso Kar (the salt lake, 30km west) in a 2-3 day loop from Leh. The route via Chumur passes through barren high-altitude desert that looks more like Mars than India. The altitude (4,522m — higher than most European ski resorts) requires 2-3 days acclimatization in Leh (3,500m) before attempting. AMS medication (Diamox) is recommended. The nearest medical facility is in Leh, 7-8 hours away. This is not casual tourism — it's high-altitude wilderness visiting.
