Tawang in February
Arunachal Pradesh, India
Skip — Sela Pass (4,170m, only road in) closes intermittently for snow; AP tourism advises against attempts Dec–Mar. The town stays accessible but Bumla Pass + Madhuri Lake day-trips are off the table. Better window: April–October.
February is Tawang's coldest — -12 to 0°C. Sela Pass can close in heavy snowfall, stranding visitors. The monastery is at its most atmospheric — monks in maroon robes against white snow, prayer wheels frozen, butter lamps flickering. Losar (Tibetan/Monpa New Year) celebrations in February are Tawang's cultural highlight. The town runs on winter survival and spiritual practice.
The February story
February's Losar is Tawang's cultural apex. The Monpa New Year celebrations transform the monastery — masked Cham dances, traditional music, communal feasting, prayer ceremonies lasting days. The monks perform ancient ritual dances representing the triumph of good over evil. The townsfolk dress in traditional Monpa attire — distinctive yak-hair caps, woven shawls, silver jewelry. The celebrations are genuine — not tourist-curated — and the warmth of Monpa hospitality in -12°C is remarkable. The monastery's 28-foot golden Buddha catches candlelight during the extended pujas. The Sela Pass in February is dangerous (ice, possible closure) — build buffer days. Hotels at ₹800-2,000 fill for Losar — book 2-3 weeks ahead. The ILP must be arranged before leaving Guwahati. February Tawang is for those who plan carefully and are rewarded with one of India's most extraordinary cultural experiences.
