Tawang in May
Arunachal Pradesh, India
Go in May — all attractions are open before monsoon, passes are clear, and 8–20°C is walkable with layers, but book permits two weeks ahead.
Peak crowds
May is one of Tawang's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Remote enough that crowds are never a problem. Sela Pass closes unpredictably in winter.
May is Tawang's spring peak — 5-18°C. Rhododendrons at Sela Pass approach are spectacular. The monastery is fully active. Madhuri Lake (officially Sangetsar Lake, formed by the 1950 earthquake) is accessible and photogenic. The drive from Tezpur (340km, 12-14 hours) through Bomdila and Sela is India's most underrated road trip. Tourist numbers build but the permit requirement keeps crowds manageable.
The May story
May Tawang is peak accessibility meeting peak beauty. The rhododendron bloom continues at higher elevations. Madhuri Lake (Sangetsar), formed when the 1950 Assam earthquake dammed a stream, is a stunning turquoise sheet with drowned trees emerging from the water. The drive from Bomdila to Tawang through Sela Pass in May — clear sky, snow peaks, blooming valleys — is India's single most underrated road journey. The monastery receives 50-100 daily visitors — busy by Tawang standards but nothing like Ladakh or Shimla crowds. The Bum La Pass (India-China border, additional military permit, subject to availability) offers a bizarre face-to-face with Chinese border guards across a fence. Hotels at ₹1,200-3,000. The ILP is straightforward online. May Tawang is the month for first-timers who want the complete package: monastery, lake, mountains, Monpa culture, and road journey.
