Tawang in March
Arunachal Pradesh, India
Skip — Sela Pass (4,170m, only road in) closes intermittently for snow; AP tourism advises against attempts Dec–Mar. The town stays accessible but Bumla Pass + Madhuri Lake day-trips are off the table. Better window: April–October.
March starts thawing Tawang — -5 to 8°C. Sela Pass gets cleared more regularly. The monastery complex begins to emerge from winter austerity. The Tawang War Memorial (honouring the 1962 India-China conflict) is stark against snow-dusted mountains. The drive from Bomdila (180km, 8 hours) through Sela is one of India's most dramatic road journeys.
The March story
March is Tawang's awakening. The ice on Sela Pass thins. The road from Bomdila becomes more reliable. The monastery shakes off winter austerity — more monks in the courtyard, more activity in the prayer halls. The ancient Urgelling Gompa (birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, 5km from town) is accessible and profoundly atmospheric — a tiny monastery with enormous significance. The Tawang War Memorial in March light, with snow-dusted mountains transitioning to spring, tells the story of the 1962 conflict with quiet dignity. The Nuranang Falls (100m, below Sela Pass) in snowmelt flow is spectacular. March accommodation at ₹800-1,500. The ILP processing is faster online now. March Tawang balances winter atmosphere with improving accessibility.
