Spiti Valley in April
Himachal Pradesh, India
Main road still snowbound; only harsh Kinnaur approach viable
April brings real thaw to Spiti. Temperatures reach 0-14°C and the sun is strong enough to make afternoons genuinely pleasant. But the Manali-Kaza road via Kunzum Pass is still buried in snow — the Atal Tunnel gets you to Manali side easily but Kunzum won't open until June-July. You're still Kinnaur-route only, and the road is slightly better than March as BRO (Border Roads Organisation) crews start clearing winter damage. Kaza is stirring: a few more guesthouses open, the ATM gets restocked more reliably, and the first domestic tourists trickle in.
The April story
April is when Spiti starts showing its bones without the snow blanket. The brown, Mars-like terrain that makes this valley famous emerges — stark, layered, ancient. The Spiti River unfreezes and runs grey-green with snowmelt. Key Monastery sits photogenically against brown hills with snow-capped peaks behind. Dhankar's precarious cliff-perch is visible from the road and the short hike up is now safe. Tabo's cave complex is accessible and the monastery is quiet. Pin Valley is still partly snow-covered but the lower stretches open for day hikes. The famous fossil-hunting around Langza village becomes possible — marine fossils at 4,200m altitude, remnants of the Tethys Sea. Practically: carry warm layers for mornings and evenings, sunscreen for intense UV, and cash — Kaza ATM is the only one in the entire valley. No mobile signal outside Kaza town.
